Friday, August 25, 2023 | Indiana, PA - The Indiana varsity football team jumped out to a great start on the season, defeating Freeport in the season opener by a score of 28-14. This was Indiana's first week 0 win since the 2016 season.
Indiana broke the scoreless game with a little over three minutes remaining in the first half when
Trevor Smith connected with
Levi Porter for a 75-yard touchdown. Marking Smith and Porter's names in the history books as the 16th longest reception in Indiana Football history. Tied with Brandon Erdely (2010) and Antonio Edlin (2001). Indiana then was able to push the score to 13-0 right before halftime with Smith sending a strike to
Anthony Kowchuck from 23-yards out. Indiana continued their dominance in the third quarter when Smith connected with Porter again for a 28-yard touchdown to put the Indians in front 20-0 over the Yellowjackets with 3:35 remaining in the quarter. Freeport didn't go away quietly scoring on back to back series in the 4th quarter bringing the score to 20-14 with 9:18 remaining. The very first play of the next series,
Levi Porter took the ball to the house from 59-yards out, ultimately securing the win for the Indians.
Defensively,
Trevor Smith had an interception while
Tyler Rifendifer,
Griffin Prebish and
Anthony Kowchuck (forced fumble) each contributed sacks.
Offensively, the Indians were led by
Trevor Smith in the passing game who went 10/19 with 204 yards and three passing touchdowns.
Levi Porter led the Indians in both rushing and recieving with 13 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown on the ground while adding three receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the passing game.
