A Week In Review: Indiana Athletics

April 10-16, 2023 | Anywhere in Pennsylvania - I apologize for the game recaps, or lack thereof for it has been a busy week in my life this past week. I hope you have your readers on and are ready for a lengthy article because we had a jampacked sports week and Indiana was very competitive in every contest. From baseball & softball all the way to track & field and everything in between, this article will cover every contest we've participated in this past week. 

Softball

McKeesport (4/12)
Indiana softball went toe to toe with section opponent McKeesport on Wednesday, April 12. Fans were rewarded with an instant classic on the diamond as the Indians defeated the tigers by a score of 9-8 in a game that spanned 11 innings. Olivia Zimmerman connected for a three run homerun in the top of the 11th which put the Indians in the lead. Haley Hamilton went 3-4 on the day. Addie Stossel struck out eight Tigers and only issued one walk while being the winning pitcher for the Indians. 

Highlands (4/14)
Indiana faced off against the Golden Rams of Highlands on Friday at home in another section matchup. The game was deadlocked at four runs a piece headed into the bottom of the 7th inning. Haley Hamilton led off the 7th with a double, moved to third on a long fly out by Zoe Brandon and eventually the Indians walked it off with a big hit by Ella Myers. Myers went 4-4 on the day with a double & three RBI's. Tori Manzek doubled in the contest. Olivia Zimmerman was the winning pitcher, striking out six Golden Rams and issuing one walk.

Homer Center (4/15)
The Indians defeated Homer Center on Saturday by a score of 6-1. Maggie Cunningham had two doubles and Olivia Zimmerman added a double. Olivia went 2-3 with two RBI's. Maggie went 3-4 on the day with three runs scored and two RBI's. Zimmerman notched a win on the mount with six strikeouts and one walk.

Baseball

Knoch (4/11 & 4/12)
The Indians swept Knoch in their section matchups winning by scores of 6-4 and 8-1 respectively. In the first matchup, Gavin Homer threw a gem on the bump and had quite a day at the plate, going 3-4 with a run and an RBI. Ben Ryan contributed with the stick, going 3-4 as well completing three parts of the cycle with a single, double and a triple. Ryan added in four RBI's and a run. Homer threw four complete innings, allowing two earned runs, walking three and striking out four. Senior hurler Connor Geesey got the win on the mound for the Indians, firing three scoreless innings in relief, scattering three hits and striking out two. 

The very next day the Indians routed the Knights on home soil by a score of 8-1. The story of the day was Ryan Okopal's gem on the mound. Okopal fired 6 2/3 innings, scattering three hits, allowing one run while walking two and striking out an astonishing 12 Knights. Trevor Smith singled twice and had an RBI and a run. Gavin Homer doubled on the day and brought in two Indian runners. Charlie Manzi added a double and an RBI of his own. Andrew McGee had two singles along with two runs and an RBI. Garrison Doughterty had a single and scored three runs. Steven Budash doubled. 

Laurel Highlands (4/14) 
Indiana shutout Laurel Highlands on Friday by a score of 2-0. Garrison Dougherty got the win for the Indians after firing four strong innings on the mound for the Indians, scattering two hits while walking two and striking out two. Gavin Homer doubled and singled on the day. 

JV Baseball
The Indiana JV Baseball Team's undefeated season came to an end this week, after going 2-1 in three contests in the week. Indiana defeated Knoch on Tuesday by a score of 16-5, followed by a second win against Knoch on Wednesday by a score of 13-6. The Indians dropped Friday's contest against Punxsutawney by a score of 11-10. 

In the first contest against Knoch, Rocco Cosentino and Caden Force each had two hits apiece. Jacob Sexton added four RBI's. Force, Jon Cribbs, and Derek Miller each tallied two RBI's. Caden Force struck out two and gave up one earned run for the win. 

In the second contest against Knoch, Sully VanHoose and Brock Lewis gave up combined five hits and let up only one earned run. VanHoose tacked on nine strikeouts. Eli Thomas had an RBI while Mikey Zimmerman and Hunter Kunkle each had hits. Tim Birch and Derek Miller each had two RBI's apiece. The Indians had nine stolen bases on the day. 

In the wild matchup with Punxsutawney, the Indians were down nine runs after three innings but found a way to tie the game up at 10 runs apiece, forcing extra innings but ultimately losing in the 9th inning.

Track & Field

Latrobe (4/12)
The Indiana track and field teams returned to action Wednesday in a section meet at Latrobe. The boys came home victorious beating the Wildcats by a score of 81-69. Ben Cochran and Levi Porter led the way for the boys winning two events on the day. Cochran won the shot put (45-0) and the discus (109-11). Porter picked up his wins in the triple jump (42-0.5) and the high jump (5-9). Other event winners for the boys included Stanford Webb in the long jump (19-6.25), Johnny Trevorrow in the 3200 meters (12:10.60), Matthew Blystone 300 hurdles (48.40), Alonzo Farrington 110 hurdles (19.30), Charlie Weber pole vault (13-0), and Jon Berzonsky 400 meters (52.20). The win improves the boys record to 2-1 in the section.

The girls were not as fortunate on the day losing their meet to Latrobe by a score of 86-64. Abbie Huey led the girls winning two events on the day. In the process Huey bettered her school record time in winning the 100 meters running a 12.20. She also won the 200 meters (26.03). Other event winners for the girls included Eve Kuzneski 400 meters (1:04.50), Emmy Davis 3200 meters (12:56.67), Katie Kovalchick shot put (34-1), and Taylor Wood javelin (100-07). With the loss the girls fall to 1-2 in the section.

Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational (4/14)
Boys had a great day! They had 52 points and were 3rd overall out of 25 teams. North Allegheny and Norwin were first and second, so we were in pretty good company.

Charlie Weber won the pole vault (14-3)
Won the 4x400 with a 3:31.25 - Jon and Will Berzonsky, Jacob Gill and Jacob Killeen.
Stanford Webb was 3rd in long jump 19-9
Levi Porter was 2nd in triple jump 41-11
Ben Cochran was 4th in shot put (47-7.5)
Jacob Gill was 4th in 400 (52.54)

Girls 4x800 with Emmy Davis, Eve Kuzneski, Rachel Gill, and Addie Fry were 4th in 10:24.53
Katie Kovalchick was 4th in javelin 107-2
4x400 with Kuzneski, Abbie Huey, Cadence Ullman, and Kate Mill was 2nd (4:09.76)
Girls were 11th with 16 points

Jr. High Track & Field

Clearfield Bison Stampede Invitational (4/14)
The Indiana Junior HIgh track and field team traveled to the Bison Stampede Invitational in Clearfield.  Both the girls and boys teams finished 3rd out of 12 teams participating.  
The Indiana girls team was led by a trio of athletes who placed in all four of their events.  Addison Porter won the long jump with a meet record leap of 16'2", placed third in the triple jump and 100 meters, and also teamed up with Gracie Reed, Karsen Scherf, and Lilly Mill to win the 4x100 meter relay.  In addition to the 4x100 relay victory, Gracie Reed also won the 400 meter dash, as well as placing second in the 300 meter hurdles (Indiana Jr. High School Record) and fourth in the 4x400 meter relay along with Findley Stewart, Abi Cramer and Sophia Sidikou.  Sophia Sidikou also placed 5th in the 100 meter hurdles, 4th in the 300 meter hurdles and 6th in the 200 meter dash.  Other placewinners on the girls side include Julia Weber who placed 4th in the pole vault, Marianne Boothman who placed 4th in the discus and the 4x800 meter team of Morgan Blystone, Laura Keppich, Cramer and Stewart who also placed 4th. 

The boys team was led by Jonas Vick and Josh Reed who placed in all four of their events.  Jonas Vick placed second in both the shot put and discus, fourth in the 800 meters, as well as teaming up with Nate Killeen, Kaiden Branan, and Grayson Brunetto to place second in the 4x800 meter relay.  Brunetto placed 4th in the pole vault and teamed with Nate Killeen, Michael Killeen, and Josh Reed to place 5th in the 4x400 relay.  In addition to the 4x400 relay, Josh Reed placed second in the 400 meter dash, 6th in the 110 meter hurdles, and 6th in the 300 meter hurdles.  Indiana's other placewinners included Matthew Stone with a 6th place finish in  the 100 meter dash, Billy Taylor who placed 6th in the 3200 meters, Luke Halchak who placed fifth in the shot put, and Nate Killeen who placed third in the high jump.

Girls' Lacrosse

Greensburg Salem (4/11)
The Indiana Girls Lacrosse team defeated Greensburg Salem 19-4. Ten Indiana players scored led by Kate Lehman and Kyla Weaver who scored four goals apiece. Lehman had 9 draw controls and Weaver added four assists.  Gianna Brody scored three goals, one assist and picked up three ground balls. Brynlee Schawl added two goals and Caroline AlbertKayla Leon,  Gabby Sharp, Anna ButerbaughSamantha Lawson and Addie Lockard added one goal each. Anna Buterbaugh and Ava Thomas split time in goal. 

Oakland Catholic (4/13)
The Indiana Girls Lacrosse team defeated Oakland Catholic 14-8 to pick up another section victory Thursday evening.  Kyla Weaver and Gianna Brody led the scoring with four goals apiece. Kate Lehman had three goals, Lucia Clark had two goals and Kayla Leon added one. Anna Buterbaugh had 6 saves in goal. Indiana is 4-1 in section and 4-3 overall.

Boys' Lacrosse

Hampton (4/10)
The Indiana boys' lacrosse team only had one matchup this week since their April 14th matchup with Sewickley was postponed. Indiana dropped Mondays game against Hampton by a score of 10-3.

Boys' Tennis

Valley (4/10)
The Indiana Boys tennis lost to Valley 3-2. Julio Minguez earned a singles victory and the doubles team of Christian Brown and Ben Froud also won.

Southmoreland (4/13)
The Indiana boys tennis swept Southmoreland on Thursday, wrapping up section play . With the victory Indiana improved to 7-1 and 5-1 in the section. Earning singles victories were Gabe Nettleton,  Julio Minguez and Kyle Zheng. The doubles teams of Noah Weigner, Andrew Kobak and Christian Brown, Ben Froud also earned victories.
