Wednesday, April 17, 2024 | Indiana, PA - Pole vaulting phenom Charlie Weber will be awarded one of the most coveted WPIAL Awards a senior can win, the James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award. This is the 33rd time the award will be given out. Charlie is just the 8th nominee selected from Indiana Area High School and is the first since 2016. For those who don't know, this award is given out to 10 senior boys and 10 senior girls from the WPIAL. Each school nominates one of each and there is a lengthy application process for the award. Collectively, students, guidance counselors and administration must gather GPA requirements, community service, athletic accolades, extra-curricular involvement along with a nominee statement from the principal and the student for why they should be chosen. This year was a WPIAL record for nominations as in total, there were 146 nominations from WPIAL schools. Charlie will be awarded a $1000 scholarship from the WPIAL for this honor. 

For those not familiar with Charlie Weber, he carries a 4.221 GPA and has been accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has participated in cross country, track and field and golf. Hie is a four-time WPIAL medalist in the pole vault and is the reigning champion in the event. He placed 9th in the state in the pole vault last spring as a junior and qualified for the Nike INdoor Nationals as a senior. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Spirit Advisory Council, Youth Advisory Committee and Green Bandanna and is a four-year Indiana High School Ambassador. Additionally, Charlie has given his time to numerous causes and events, including the Turkey Trot, Parent Engagement Night, United Way, new student orientation, ICCAP food distribution/packing, Salvation Army and Love Basket of Indiana.
