Indiana Victorious in Thursday Matinees

Thursday, January 12, 2023 | North Braddock & Indiana, PA - Indiana hosted three varsity sports on Thursday night, including hockey, wrestling, and swimming/diving and swept in all three. Additionally, Indiana went on the road to Woodland Hills high school to face off against the Wolverines in girls' basketball & rifle competition. 

Girls' Basketball
The Indiana girls' basketball team went on the road to face off against a tough section opponent in Woodland Hills. Woodland Hills (5-7 overall, 3-2 section) gave the Indians a battle the entire night, but Indiana was able to secure a 54-44 win. Indiana improves to 5-0 in the section and 9-4 overall. For the Indians, freshman guard Jayla Peterson notched a career high with 20 points while also going a perfect 12/12 from the foul line. Bella Antonacci followed suit by scoring 15 points of her own, her third highest total on the year. Katie Kovalchick scored 9 points and collected 8 rebounds as well. Up next for the Indians is a home Monday night matchup with the Plum Mustangs, another section foe. 

The JV Indiana squad also defeated Woodland Hills by a score of 58-29. Cassie Boyer led the charge with 16 points followed by Sera Todd (8 points) and Emily Betsinger (8 points). The Indiana JV team's record stands at 9-2. 

Swimming & Diving
The IHS swimming & diving team cruised to a dominate win over Ligonier Valley on Thursday night with the girls winning 147-23 and the boys winning 115-32. Indiana took 1st place in all 23 events. Leading the charge for the Indians were Alex Bauer who took 1st in the Boys 200 Yard IM (1:58.56) and the Boys 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:00.87), Maddy Bauer who took 1st in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle (2:08.31) and the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke (1:06.95), Preston Kessler who took 1st in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle (1:44.92) and the Boys 100 Yard Freestyle (46.78), Peyton Scott who took 1st in the Girls 100 Yard Butterfly (1:00.50) and the Girls 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:06.70), Joey Margita who took 1st in the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle (23.68) and the Boys 100 Yard Butterfly (58.02), Emme Fry who took 1st in the Girls 200 Yard IM (2:26.38), Sydney Anderson who took 1st in the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle (26.56), Kara Nelson who took 1st in the Girls 1 MTR Diving (149.45), Matthew Blystone who took 1st in the Boys 1 MTR Diving (206.70), Ellie Speer who took 1st in the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.49), Lucy Powers who took 1st in the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle (6:06.48) and Eli Aiken who took 1st in the Boys 100 Yard Backstroke (1:03.58). 

We also swept in the relay swims starting with the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay (Maddy Bauer, Peyton Scott, Emme Fry and Hadley Long) won with a time of 1:57.04. The Boys 200 Yard Medley Relay (Eli Aiken, Evan Speer, Hagen Jones and Matthew Blystone) won with a time of  1:52.99. The Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (Hadley Long, Morgan Grove, Peyton Scott and Sydney Anderson) won with a time of 1:49.00. The Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (Preston Kessler, Evan Speer, Eli Aiken and Joey Margita)  won with a time of 1:37.21. The Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (Maddy Bauer, Morgan Grove, Hadley Long and Sydney Anderson) won with a time of 4:00.03. Lastly, the Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (Alex Bauer, Joey Margita, Rey Nunez and Preston Kessler) won with a time of 3:30.54. 

Up next, the Indians host Derry on Thursday, February 19th starting at 6:15 PM at the Zink and Field House Natatorium. 

Wrestling
The IHS wrestling team secured an electric win on Thursday night over the Altoona Mountain Lions. Indiana held a 27-22 lead over Altoona with only two weight classes left to wrestle, 215lbs & heavyweight. It was crucial that Indiana win one of the two matches to secure the victory. Griffin Prebish (215lbs) took matters into his own hands getting out to an early 3-0 lead before securing a pin in the 3rd period to push Indiana ahead 36-22, ultimately sealing the match victory for the Indians who won 36-25.

Hockey
The Indiana hockey team defeated Hampton by a score 6-2. Landin Wilson scored twice in a row for Indiana with assists by Colton Rayko, Gabe Nettleton, and Adam Ball. Philip Bell (Gabe Nettleton) scored next followed by Sam Barley (Philip Bell), Colton Rayko and Max Johnson (Sam Barley/Nate Wood). Jayden Learn had 6 saves in net. 

Up next for the Indians is a home game against Greensburg Salem on January 26th at 7:30 PM.

Rifle
The Indiana rifle team dropped their matchup with Woodland Hills on Wednesday night by a score of 790-48x to 761-26x. The top shooter for Indiana was Ryan Shaffer with 98-8x. 

Up next for Indiana is a home matchup with Hempfield on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
