WPIAL Champion Coach Greg Lezanic Retires After 12 Seasons at Indiana

Wednesday, February 14, 2024 | Indiana, PA - Greg Lezanic, 2015 WPIAL Boys' Basketball AAA Champion & Coach of the Year is hanging up his whistle after his 12th season with the Indiana boys' basketball program. Lezanic amassed a career record coaching basketball with the Penns Manor girls' ('89-'98), Purchase Line girls' ('01-'02), Marion Center girls' ('02-'11) and Indiana boys' ('12-'24) of 427-324 and notably coached a year of baseball at Marion Center in 1984 where the team went 7-10 overall. Lezanic's overall record as the boys' coach at Indiana Area was 136-134. He has coached varsity high school athletes for 32 years and also was the Athletic Director at IASD from 2016-2022.

In his tenure as the boys' basketball coach, the special season that has always stuck out was the 2015 WPIAL AAA Championship run. The only WPIAL boys' basketball championship in school history. The team as a whole went 25-3 that year, and won the WPIAL Championship on a layup over Beaver Falls with a final score of 62-61. Lezanic said "While every season has a special place in my heart, the back-to-back District 6 girls' basketball championships at Marion Center and WPIAL boys' basketball championship at Indiana will always be extra special"

Coach Lezanic's success wasn't just done by himself. "I had great assistant coaches through the years. These include, but not limited to, Mike Reilly, Ron Fulton, David Tatarko, Ernie Fairman, Lynn Fry, Stanford Webb III and Mark Arbuckle. The coaches not only helped develop our teams, but also enabled me to receive several local Coach of the Year awards and the 2015 Pennsylvania Boys' Basketball Associated Press Coach of the Year."

One thing coach had always preached was that it's always a goal to have a great record, but there's more to it. "While I always had my teams set season goals; I always set yearly goals for myself as a coach. I always wanted to develop my student-athletes into better players, better teammates, increase their knowledge of the game, and help them become better people." said Lezanic.

Lastly, Lezanic wanted to talk about the kids themselves and the impact they have made on him and hopefully he had made on them. "I am extremely proud of the successful young men and women that have come through my programs. I hope my expectations of responsibility, punctuality and accountability had a small part in the development of who the student-athletes were and who they have become."
